Missouri - Springfield Symphony The idea for a symphony orchestra in Springfield, Missouri, began in the Fall of 1933. A group of Springfield High School students approached James Robertson, music teacher at the school, wondering if he might be interested in forming a civic orchestra. The students wanted a place to play after they graduated from high school. In the Spring of 1934, James Robertson, Richie Robertson (James' father), and Will James, noted local music store owner, joined to promote the idea in the community. By October 1934 the enthusiastic response resulted in the formation of the Springfield Symphony Society.
